What Are Deities? All About Deities Part 1

What are Deities?

The definition from Google dictionary defines a Deity as…

Plural noun: Deities

A God or Goddess (in a polytheistic religion).

“A Deity of ancient Greece”

Similar: God, Goddess, divine being, celestial being, supreme being, divinity, immortal, creator, demiurge, godhead, daemon, numen, avatar

  • Divine status, quality, or nature. “A ruler driven by delusions of deity”

  • The creator and supreme being (in a monotheistic religion such as Christianity). “She raised her head as if appealing to the Deity presiding over the church.”

  • A representation of a God or Goddess, such as a statue or carving. “Also on show is a bronze falcon deity”

Simply put, Deities are Gods and Goddesses. Deities are sacred and holy beings who are able to work supernatural miracles. There are many Deities (some say there are billions!) and they are depicted in a variety of forms, although mostly as the human form. Since the beginning of the earliest civilizations, humans have worshipped Deities. Deities were believed to be the ones in control of the uncontrollable, the earthquakes, the lightning, the floods and other disasters.

Many people worship the Christian God, and some people worship ten Deities at once. There is no right or wrong answer to how many Deities you should worship, it’s purely down to your own decision and what you feel comfortable with.

Do what makes you happy my dears. No Deities, one Deity or even fifteen Deities, you are no more or less a Witch whether you choose whether or not to worship a Deity. Witchcraft is not a religion, it is a practice. You can be any Witch you like, a Christian Witch, an Atheist Witch, again, whatever you feel comfortable with.

Deities are a divine higher power. They are wise, they are teachers, they guide us on our paths. We call upon them when we seek answers or guidance.

Witches may work with a Deities energy when performing spells. Or if somebody is looking to make changes to their life, for example – you may wish to improve your love life, Aphrodite may be called upon to guide you, and she can share her glorious, warm, loving energy with you, and teach you more about your feminine and sexual side.

You will probably find that your Deities come looking for you, they often try to make themselves known to you and try to grab your attention! If their attention is bothering you (they can be pretty persistent!), you can politely decline their offer by saying something along the lines of “*Deity name* I acknowledge you and I am aware of your efforts to reach out to me. I thank you for your offer but at this moment I must decline.” Or you can begin your journey by learning more about the Deity that is making themselves known to you.

Start by reading research books, old stories, finding information about them online. Learn their history, what they went through in life, their favourite things.

Really decide if this Deity is who you would like to work with, do they align with your values? Do you feel they could help you? Do you feel comfortable about this Deity, and is your intuition telling you to go ahead?

Or you can do lots of research yourself and find a Deity who really speaks to you and your needs. It’s completely up to you.

Now remember guys, a Deity is a real being. You can’t just essentially scan through a catalogue and say “I’ll take that one!”

Choosing a Deity is a decision not to be taken lightly, think of it as a long term open relationship. You both know you may not be together forever, you may even see other people, but that doesn’t mean during your time together you don’t wish to feel valued, respected and cared for.

Nobody wants a partner who they only hear from when they want something, when they need a favour or they want you to use your valuable time and energy to benefit themselves.

To worship a Deity you need to build a relationship with them.

Acknowledge them, talk to them, wish them a wonderful day when you wake up. You can write them letters, create something for them, art, a poem, a song. Bring them their favourite things to eat and drink, their favourite scents. Learn about them, this is so important! How special do you feel when somebody wants to know everything about you and takes the time to learn about all the things that make you, you?

A lot of people like to dedicate an altar to their Deity, dressing it in their Deities favourite colours, flowers and herbs. This is also a great place to leave your offerings.

Well, you will know what to look out for if you have done your research on your chosen Deity.

They will begin to send you signs that are associated with them, certain animals or insects may often make an appearance in your life and dreams. You will feel their energy around you, you may notice certain scents in the air that associate with them, they may talk to you, leave you gifts, miraculous things may start happening in your life.

Love and appreciate your Deities while you have a relationship together. Thank them for their love, guidance and support, and trust that they know what they’re doing and everything will always work out in the end.

In Part 2 we will be talking about many of the various Deities and their pantheons. And in part 3 I’ll be sharing what I experienced when my Deity called out to me and why I made the decision to work with her.

Do you work with any Deities? What are your experiences? Let us know in the comments.

Love and light,
